Five Jutland municipalities dominate in solar energy production

Aabenraa and Vejle accounted for the highest production of electricity from solar panels from April 2024 to April this year

More than a quarter of Denmark’s solar power over the past year was produced in five Jutland municipalities.

This is shown by figures from Energinet, accessed by Ritzau.

Aabenraa, Vejle, Viborg, Ringkøbing, and Holstebro top the list showing how much each of Denmark’s 98 municipalities contributed to the country’s solar energy last year.

The five municipalities accounted for about 27 percent of production from April 2024 to April 2025.

- What we can see is that some of the geographically larger municipalities have the highest production. They have the space for large-scale solar farms, says David Hartz, senior consultant at Energinet.

Close behind the top five are Lolland, Faxe, Lemvig, and Randers.

The trend continues into May, with Energinet expecting the month to set a new record for solar energy production.

The current record is from June 2023, with 638 gigawatt-hours. Energinet estimates that May will reach 657.

- It really depends on the weather for the rest of the month. It could end up being a close race, says David Hartz.

In 2022, Danish solar panels provided about six percent of the country’s net electricity production.

By 2024, that number had risen to more than nine percent, according to Energinet figures.

In just three years, from 2020 to 2023, Denmark’s capacity for solar power generation tripled — mainly due to the construction of large ground-mounted facilities.
