A first-of-its-kind hybrid system secures operations for DIN Forsyning

Custom-engineered mtu system ensures operational continuity following coal phase-out.

Following the closure of Denmark’s final coal-fired power plant in 2024, DIN Forsyning had to find alternative heating solutions to maintain a stable district heating supply for 185,000 residents. With just four hours of allowable downtime per year and coal no longer in the equation, the need for a resilient and sustainable energy system was urgent.

This necessity became the catalyst for their transition to more sustainable operations.

Transitioning to greener energy sources

BOS Power and Rolls-Royce created a hybrid mtu solution, integrating emergency power, energy storage, and advanced heat recovery. The custom-engineered system was designed to meet stringent uptime requirements and enable long-term energy flexibility. Though the mtu gas and battery technologies were proven separately, integrating them into a single operational system was a pioneering effort.

The solution delivers threefold value: grid stability, high-efficiency heat generation, and backup power.

Its hydrogen-ready design and revenue-generating potential, through Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) participation, signal a forward-thinking approach to energy resilience and cost optimisation. This project uses today’s technology to address tomorrow’s challenges.
